Any visit to this enchanted isle must be deemed incomplete without savouring the wealth of history offered by Dunvegan Castle. The North of Scotland's oldest inhabited Castle, having been the seat and home of the MacLeod Chiefs for 800 years. Dunvegan Castle is a fortress stronghold in an idyllic lochside setting, surrounded by dramatic scenery, where seals play and eagles soar.
On display are many fine oil paintings and great clan treasures; ' The Fairy Flag' - the sacred banner of the Clan which is said to possess 'miraculous powers' for the MacLeod clan, the Dunvegan Cup - a unique mazer of the middle ages and the Speckled Bagpipes - famous throughout the piping world. Also on view are many items in the Bonnie Prince Charlie exhibition.
There is so much to see and do at Dunvegan Castle. Take a walk around the recently opened Walled Garden with its own Standing Stone and Pyramid, or visit the Pedigree Highland Cattle Fold. Dunvegan Castle is also famous for its magnificent Water Gardens and Woodland Walks. You can visit the seal colony - a favourite with children and adults alike and take a fascinating and exhilarating boat trip through Loch Dunvegan to observe at close quarters these playful sea mammals - take your camera, you will get some photos. |
