Durham Castle

Durham Castle, Durham, County Durham Founded in 1072, the Castle was the Palace of the Prince Bishop's of Durham until 1832 when it became the foundation college of the University of Durham (University College). The Norman Chapel dates from 1080, the Great Hall from 1284 and the extensive kitchens from 1499. The Castle with the Cathedral has the status of a World Heritage site. This gives international recognition to the unique, historic and scenic character of this central part of Durham City. The status is only granted sparingly and puts this site on a par with such world famous buildings as the Taj Mahal.
